Co-curricular

St Pius, Banyo encourages all children to make the most of their time at school and to become actively involved in their community. Our school provides a holistic learning environment which caters for each child's academic, physical, social and emotional development within a balanced educational program based on Christian values. To foster this, we encourage participation in activities that fall outside the realm of the normal curriculum of our school. We encourage all children to make the most of their time at school and to become actively involved in their community.

Here are some examples of activities on offer that foster a holistic approach to education at St Pius School, Banyo:

  • Choirs - The choirs rehearse weekly on a wide range of songs. The groups learn about pacing, harmony, breathing and pitch and put these skills into practice as they sing at school events and competitions.
  • Instrumental Music Lessons - In Year 4, students are invited to learn an instrument and be a part of the Year 4 Band Program. In Years 5 and 6, students may continue in the program and become a part of the instrumental band (which practices weekly). Students who are requiring further tuition with their musical instrument can have private lessons through school hours with JD Instrumental. Piano, guitar and drum tuition is also available.
  • Arts Show - An evening which displays the impressive artistic talents of the St Pius students.
  • Dance Cart - Dance Cart offers comprehensive programs that not only engages students in fun physical activity but also assesses them according to the Dance strand of the Australian Curriculum in the Years 1 - 10 Arts Syllabus.
  • Swimming Lessons - Weekly swimming lessons are held for all students in Prep to Year 6 in Terms 1 and 4 using our school facilities. After school lessons are available through qualified instructors. Banyo Community Swimming Club meets on a Sunday afternoon during the warmer months.
  • Year 6 Leadership Program - Our students in the upper primary classes make a valuable contribution to the tone of the school and to the enthusiasm and motivation of the younger children herein. To this end, we promote a Leadership program for students in Year 6 which focuses on developing our students’ leadership skills through formal leadership training and practical leadership experiences.
  • Sports Training - In the lead up to Swimming, Athletics & Cross Country carnivals students are given opportunities to prepare for school, zone and metropolitan based carnivals.
  • Bramble Bay Sporting Competitions and Trials - Students at St Pius (who meet age requirements) are invited to trial for the Bramble Bay representative teams across a variety of sports. Should a student be selected for a Bramble Bay team, they are then eligible for further representative honours e.g. Met North
  • Academic competitions -  ICAS Maths and English testing is authentic, higher-end assessment designed to challenge a student's knowledge and understanding over a spectrum of levels of difficulty. Students are also invited to attend Brainwaves and Gateways extension events.
  • Structured Play - Lunchtimes - Structured Play is a social emotional support program offered to children requiring support.  Some children use it as a sensory break from the busy lunch time playground.
